Determining TMJ - Tests We Can Do

Our neuromuscular dentists will consider all of the information you have provided in addition to doing a physical exam of your teeth, head, and neck. When indicated, they may also conduct a series of tests using non-invasive electronic instruments. Some of the tests that may be used are:

TENS (myomonitor): This is a battery operated electrical muscle stimulator that delivers a mild electrical stimulus to the muscles of the face and jaw area and possibly the neck and shoulder area. The purpose is to exercise these muscles and to cause them to relax.

Computerized Mandibular Scanning or Jaw Tracking technology: This provides a picture of what is happening with your muscles and joints as you perform a full range of motions.

Electromyography (EMG): This provides information on the activity of key muscles that control the jaw during various functions as well as at rest.

Sonography: Assesses the status of the articular disk and jaw joint function.

Data from these tests will indicate whether your bite
is a major contributing factor to the pain and discomfort you are experiencing.
