Neuromuscular dentistry considers the entire system that controls the positioning and function of your jaw. The neuromuscular dentist seeks to establish a harmonious relationship between your teeth, muscles, and jaw joints.

The process of closing your jaw is referred to as occlusion, and the position of your jaw is referred to as your bite. If your teeth do not fit together properly (misaligned bite), the muscles have to work harder to bring the bite together, which can result in a multitude of painful conditions, which include severe headaches or jaw joint pain. This could signal symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, otherwise known as TMJ.

There are a variety of tests that neuromuscular dentists can do to determine if your bite is misaligned, and can provide you with some temporary treatments in the form of orthotics. These orthotics differ from splints or nightguards where the dentist may have manipulated your lower jaw or simply had you "bite down". Traditional splints and bite guards do not take into account a better bite and as a result, do not correct the bite, allowing grinding and other symptoms unaddressed. If the orthotic corrects your bite and resolves your painful symptoms, you may choose to continue use this non-permanent device or you may elect to have these corrections permanently made to your teeth. It is important not to ignore your
pain because it can develop into more serious problems in the future.
