Sleep Disturbance

Roseville Cosmetic Dentist serving Sacramento, Rocklin & Lincoln, CA

Sleep is an important part of our everyday health and well-being. However, about 40% of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep each night and 40 million people suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders with an additional 20 million people who suffer from occasional sleep disturbances. If you feel the daily effects of constantly interrupted sleep, you are not alone.

Sleep apnea can deteriorate an individual's quality of life by causing daytime sleepiness and contributing to depression, poor job performance, memory loss, frequent nighttime urination, and increase risk of accidents and increased chances of additional health problems such as acid reflex, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure.  Snoring sounds can also affect family and loved ones of an individual with sleep apnea by interrupting the quality sleep of those around them.

At Nu Smile in Roseville, we offer our sleep-deprived patients the MicrO2sleep appliance to aid in remedying sleep disturbance for due to snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Causes of Sleep Disturbance

Sleep disturbance is often caused by snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. While you sleep, your tongue and throat tissues can relax and narrow your airway. Snoring is the sound of your breath passing through this partially obstructed airway and vibrating the surrounding tissues.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a more serious condition where your tongue and throat tissues relax enough to completely obstruct your airway. When air cannot enter your lungs, your heart races, the oxygen in your blood decreases, and your brain panics. Your sleep is disrupted until you can breathe well. Then you fall back to sleep only to have the cycle repeat itself throughout the night.

How MicrO2 Works

MicrO2 is fabricated by Microdental and is an easy-to-use, comfortable device that helps our Sacramento area patients find relief from snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The MicrO2 device works by gently holding your lower jaw forward while you sleep. Keeping your jaw forward helps to tighten throat tissue and advance the tongue out of the airway. This keeps your airway open in order to reduce the occurrence of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea symptoms.
