Snoring Patient From Rocklin

Forty five percent of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25% snore habitually. The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway, where the tongue and upper throat meet at the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing. There are many reasons why people snore, some of them can be related to:

  • Temporomandibular Joint Disease (TMD) or the more commonly known Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). When a person snores, their mouth falls open and stays open for long periods of time. This unnatural opening of the mouth can disjoint the jaw and create painful symptoms, which may be overlooked as TMJ.
  • Poor muscle tone in the tongue or throat
  • Excessive bulkiness of throat tissue, such as large tonsils or adenoids.
  • Long soft palate and/or uvula
  • Obstructed nasal airways when you have hay fever or a stuffy nose due to a cold; or obstruction due to a deviated septum.

Snoring can be dangerous because it disturbs sleep patterns and deprives the snorer of necessary rest
at bedtime. When snoring is severe, it can cause long-term health problems, including obstructive sleep apnea.

We treat TMJ-related snoring by using orthotics, which are oral appliances worn while you sleep. These custom-fabricated orthotics adjust your jaw to a correct position that opens the throat and allows you to breath freely, eliminating snoring.

If you are experiencing snoring, headaches, jaw joint pain, or any other symptoms that may be associated with TMD, it is important to schedule an evaluation with our LVI-trained dentists to help solve the problem. When experiencing TMJ symptoms, it is also a good idea to visit an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist) or an Atlas Orthoganist Chiropractor who will help rule out any other medical problems that share the same symptoms.

Our dentists offer a TMJ consultation, where you may discuss your symptoms and get on track to a pain free life.
