Bad Breath
Bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis, is an unpleasant and embarrassing situation that many people live with. Some people with bad breath aren't even aware that there is a problem.
Some of the causes for bad breath are:
- Certain foods such as garlic and onions
- Infrequent eating
- Lack of good oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing twice a day in addition to cleaning your tongue of bacteria.
- Dry mouth or xerostomia, which can be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continually breathing through the mouth.
- Use of tobacco products
- Medical disorders such as local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbances and liver or kidney ailments.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential in reducing bad breath. It is important to also schedule regular dental visits for a professional cleaning and checkup to catch any developing issues before they become significant. Mouthwashes are generally cosmetic and do not have a long lasting effect on bad breath,
however, your dentist may recommend the use of an antimicrobial rinse as part of your daily regimen.
If you are experiencing bad breath, it is important to keep a log of the foods you eat and make a list of the medications you take daily. Let your dentist know of any changes that have occurred since your last appointment, such as illness or surgery. If you are experiencing symptoms associated with gum disease, such as bleeding or tender gums, loose teeth, chronic bad breath, or a chronic bad taste in your mouth, it is important that you address it immediately with a dental professional.
