You’re no doubt familiar with the idea of using a mouth guard to protect your teeth in sports, or perhaps using an orthotic insole to correct a walking or posture problem? How about a mouth guard that not only guards your smile, but also corrects your bite and improves your strength and balance!

You may be familiar with the term “Neuromuscular Dentistry” (NMD) and how the wrong jaw position can cause all sorts of problems. Dr. Arthur Kwan, a PPM certified dentist determines your best possible jaw position through computerized tracking of your jaw, utilizing a K7 computer. A TENS (Transcutaneous Electro Neural Stimulation) machine is then used to help relax your muscles, putting them in their most comfortable position. When your facial muscles are in this position, your PPM is fitted, thus returning your muscles to this relaxed position when the mouth guard is worn. When your jaw is in its optimal position, as it is when wearing your custom fitted PPM, the muscles are no longer stressed, thus giving you the best bite along with the added benefits of improved balance, and increased upper body strength. The PPM Mouthguard is not designed for therapeutic use. Therapeutic treatment of TMJ disorders are treated with a neuromuscular orthotic. The History of the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM)

A neuromuscular orthotic was originally designed and traditionally used for treating TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), and the pain associated with the disorder, including clenching, headaches, and earaches. Patients with jaw problems who were being treated with a neuromuscular orthotic were finding they had increased upper body strength. The founder of PPM, Canadian Dentist Dr. Anil Makkar, was seeing incredible results in many of his patients who were being treated for jaw conditions. Patients were discovering that wearing their orthotic not only alleviated pain but also provided additional benefits of increased strength and improved balance. From these findings, the PPM was developed. The PPM combines the properties of a mouth guard to absorb the impact from a traumatic hit, or blow, while being designed at the most optimal position of the lower jaw.

The Science Behind Pure Power Mouthguard

In 90 percent of the population, the lower jaw is not in an optimal position, which causes facial muscles to be "unhappy" where they are situated. The PPM is based on the concepts of neuromuscular dentistry, a science developed by Dr. Bernard Jankelson that incorporates the muscles, nerves, and supporting structures of the mouth, in order to improve jaw and muscle alignment. "I'm always prepared to make a tackle but being a kicker in the NFL: that rarely ever happens," said Brown. "I felt like he (Hester) wasn't really taking me into account...My whole body was able to take some relief during that game and the entire season because I had the PPM. The game just came a lot easier to me.”

Where to get a Pure Power Mouthguard

The PPM Mouthguard is only available through our PPM certified neuromuscular dentist. If you are a candidate for the PPM, impressions will be taken of your lower and upper teeth and your optimal bite will be determined during your first appointment (approximately one to two hours). After it is fabricated by the lab (approximately 2 weeks), your PPM will be fitted during a second visit with Dr. Arthur Kwan (only five to ten minutes).
