Laser Dentistry
Since 1991, the medical field has transformed the low powered technology of some lasers into highly accurate surgical tools. Lasers deliver energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, laser energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a target. In terms of laser dentistry, some of these targets can be tooth decay or overgrown gum tissue. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting other wavelengths. Lasers are very specific in regard to the wavelength produced, which means that lasers can be adjusted to the specific task or procedure you want to perform.
In cosmetic dentistry, lasers are now being used for gum contouring, periodontal care, and teeth whitening, as well as curing or hardening of bonding materials, as in the application of porcelain veneers. In periodontal care, the painless ray of light removes the infected tissue. Lasers cauterize as they work, which makes healing faster, and the process cleaner.
During your oral exam, we examine all areas of the mouth. If we find something that looks suspicious, like a sore that bleeds easily or does not heal, a laser biopsy may be recommended. This usually requires little or no anesthesia.
As part of your oral exam, our cosmetic dentist may also find mouth ulcers, otherwise known as canker
sores. Often they are simply caused by trauma and heal quickly on their own. The recurrent, bothersome form is known as aphthous ulcers. The cause for this condition is unknown, but is believed to be a result of a compromised immune system, as seen in Bechet's Syndrome, HIV and other autoimmune diseases. The lesions are almost always found on the loose tissues of the mouth, such as the cheek, inner lip, tongue, soft palate, floor of the mouth and sometimes the throat. The ulcers are usually small and surrounded by a reddish halo. Laser treatments provide immediate pain relief and help promote healing within 24-72 hours.
Lasers can perform all of these functions without changing or damaging the surrounding tissues or materials. They have been shown to be safe and effective for treating both adults and children. Cosmetic dentists prefer to use them in any application, because ultimately, they cause less stress and anxiety for the patient.
Our doctors have been very specifically trained in the use of these lasers, and we look forward to being able to offer laser technology in a larger variety of procedures in the future.
